SUMMARY:POSTPONED | Summer Concert Series: Elite Syncopation with Roy Wiseman
DESCRIPTION:The quintet Elite Syncopation\, an ensemble specializing in performances of early blues\, ragtime\, and jazz\, will present a concert of classic American music from 100 years ago\, focusing on key musicians of the Harlem Renaissance\, including Duke Ellington\, Scott Joplin\, and Jelly Roll Morton. \nThe concert will focus on authentic hundred-year-old period arrangements of many American music classics\, including Jelly Roll Morton’s pathbreaking blues composition the Jelly Roll Blues; James Reese Europe’s Castle House Rag; Duke Ellington’s Black and Tan Fantasy; and other music by key musical figures of the period including Armand Piron\, Eubie Blake\, John Rosamond Johnson\, Perry Bradford\, and Spencer Williams. \nElite Syncopation’s members are Liz Smith\, on flute\, clarinet\, and saxophone; Perry Elliot\, violin; Julie Ribchinsky\, cello; Roy Wiseman\, double bass; and Gary Chapman\, piano. The group has toured nationally on the rosters of David Rowe Artists and Columbia Artists’ Community Concerts\, and has been featured on The Voice of America\, Connecticut Public Radio\, and Open Air New England. \nElite Syncopation‘s performances are based on an archive of rare performance materials going back to the early nineteenth century\, many of them unheard since the years of their original publication. Culled from university archives\, the Library of Congress\, and the holdings of private collectors from throughout the U.S.\, these long out-of-print arrangements offer a rare opportunity to hear America’s music from the era before recorded sound. \nFree concert Wednesday\, July 31 at 6:30 p.m. Raindate is Thursday\, August 1 at 6:30.

SUMMARY:Summer Concert Series: Nat Reeves Quartet
DESCRIPTION:NAT REEVES — For more than 40 years\, Nat Reeves has been one of the top bassists in jazz. His supportive and stimulating playing has uplifted countless sessions and recording dates (most notably with the great altoists Jackie McLean and Kenny Garrett) and he has led his own recordings State of Emergency and Blue Ridge. Both as a performer and an educator\, he has made a strong impact on the jazz world. \nIn 1979\, Nat moved to New York City. “I listened\, played on the streets\, listened some more\, and learned.” He first toured with Sonny Stitt in 1982 in Japan during what would be the great saxophonist’s last tour. The same year he met Jackie McLean\, who became his mentor.  Soon after\, he began teaching at the University of Hartford and touring the world with Jackie McLean and other Jazz masters\, including Kenny Garrett\, Harold Mabern\, Eddie Henderson\, Steve Davis\, Eric Alexander\, Rene McLean\, and most recently Pharoah Sanders. \nIn 2001 Nat began a full-time teaching career at The Hartt School\, Jackie McLean Institute. “I build on what my students already know and try to convince them to be more aggressive with learning. I think of teaching like playing a gig: being well organized\, accomplishing goals\, and solving problems. It is a lot of fun\, and it makes me a better musician.” Although Nat retired from the University in 2021\, he continues to perform and teach. Nat’s performance career is supercharged: “I’m excited for what is ahead.” \nSARAH HANAHAN —Sarah Hanahan is an up-and-coming jazz saxophonist in New York City. Sarah is a graduate of the Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz at the Hartt School of Music where she received her bachelor’s degree in 2019.  In 2022\, she received her Masters degree from The Juilliard School in 2022. Sarah tours both nationwide and internationally with Ulysses Owens Jr. and Generation Y\, Sherrie Miracle and the Diva Orchestra\, Joe Farnsworth\, and the Grammy award-winning Mingus Big Band. \nSarah was recently featured in the first-ever class of NPR Jazz Night in America’s Youngbloods. The series features “five up-and-coming jazz geniuses who are revolutionizing their genre” – all of whom are under the age of 30. \nCAELAN CARDELLO — Born into a musical household in Teaneck\, NJ\, Caelan Cardello practically had music infused in his DNA from the start. He started playing the piano at the age of five and within two years had begun formal training in both classical and jazz piano with jazz pianist/arranger Allen Farnham and Juilliard alum Steve Masi.  Caelan’s consistent musical growth enabled him to secure mentorships with some of the most sought-after jazz giants of our time\, most notably Fred Hersch\, Frank Kimbrough\, and Dave Kikoski. \nCaelan’s involvement in the renowned Jazz House Kids arts program\, developed by jazz vocalist Melissa Walker and husband\, bassist Christian McBride offered him opportunities to play and study with some of the most prominent figures in jazz today including Jimmy Cobb\, Dee Dee Bridgewater\, Jack DeJohnette\, and Christian McBride to name a few. \nCaelan graduated from William Paterson University with a bachelor’s degree in jazz performance.  He studied with many venerable jazz masters\, including Bill Charlap and the late great Harold Mabern.  He has performed at Dizzy’s Club\, Minton’s Playhouse\, and the Jazz Standard\, among others. Currently\, Caelan is performing in New York City\, around the tri-state area\, and tours throughout the US. He began his master’s program in Jazz Performance at the Juilliard School In 2023. \nHANK ALLEN-BARFIELD — Hank Allen-Barfield is a young\, up-and-coming jazz drummer in New York City.
